Live Streaming Drops — Fixes by Cause
Here are the eight most common reasons your live broadcast freezes or your stream cuts out, along with fixes you can apply right away. Work through them from the top down.
Insufficient upload speed
Streaming 1080p 60fps requires a stable upload speed of at least 6 Mbps, with 10 Mbps recommended. Real-world measurements are often lower than the advertised speed.
- ▸Measure your upload speed (not download) at speedtest.net
- ▸If real throughput falls short, drop the bitrate from 4 Mbps to 3 Mbps and retry
- ▸If you're on Wi-Fi, switch to wired Ethernet (especially when even 5 GHz is unstable)
- ▸Reboot the router and re-test at the same time of day
Bitrate set too high
Pushing the bitrate too high in pursuit of quality means uploads can't keep up and packets drop. Always check the 'Dropped Frames' ratio in the OBS Stats window.
- ▸Open OBS → Tools → Stats and confirm Dropped Frames is at 0%
- ▸Recommended: 1080p 30fps 4500 Kbps, 1080p 60fps 6000 Kbps, 720p 60fps 4500 Kbps
- ▸Switch output mode from 'Simple' to 'Advanced' and use a 'CBR' encoder
- ▸Lock the keyframe interval to 2 seconds (the platform-recommended value)
RTMP server location
YouTube and Twitch automatically pick a nearby server, but TikTok and some global platforms cut out often when the server is far away.
- ▸YouTube: keep the 'Auto' setting but prefer Korean or Japanese servers
- ▸TikTok: 'Live Studio' auto-optimizes; when streaming directly from OBS, pick the closest RTMP URL
- ▸Chzzk and AfreecaTV: servers are in Korea, so problems are usually rare
CPU/GPU encoder load
The x264 software encoder leans heavily on the CPU, while NVENC/AMD hardware encoders use the GPU. If the encoder is starved during gameplay, the picture stutters.
- ▸OBS → Output → set the encoder to 'NVIDIA NVENC' or 'AMD HW H.264'
- ▸Check utilization: in Task Manager (Win) or Activity Monitor (Mac), sustained CPU/GPU above 95% means you're out of headroom
- ▸Lower the preset from 'Quality' to 'Performance' to ease the load
- ▸Drop the game's graphics options by one tier
Wi-Fi signal interference
Distance from the router or channel overlap with other wireless devices (microwaves, Bluetooth, etc.) causes intermittent packet loss.
- ▸Sit in the same room as the router, or connect directly with a cable
- ▸Use the 5 GHz band (2.4 GHz has heavier interference)
- ▸Manually switch the router channel to an empty one among 1, 6, or 11
- ▸If you use mesh Wi-Fi, connect straight to the main router (each mesh node adds latency)
OBS version or settings conflict
Right after an OBS update, some plugins may become incompatible or settings can reset, causing the stream to suddenly become unstable.
- ▸Use OBS 30.x or newer (older versions lack support for the latest RTMP authentication)
- ▸Back up profiles/settings, then rebuild cleanly with a new profile
- ▸Remove plugins you don't use
- ▸Advanced → set process priority to 'High'
Firewall, VPN, or antivirus
If a firewall, VPN, or antivirus blocks the RTMP port (1935) or HTTPS (443), the stream either fails to start or cuts out mid-broadcast.
- ▸If a VPN is on, turn it off and retry
- ▸Add OBS to the exclusion list in your antivirus's real-time protection
- ▸Corporate/school networks usually block RTMP — work around it with a hotspot or another line
- ▸On YouTube, try the 'Backup RTMP' or 'HLS' option
Temporary platform-side outage
If your PC and internet are fine but the stream still drops, the platform itself may be having an outage.
- ▸YouTube: check status.cloud.google.com or the YouTube Creators Twitter account
- ▸TikTok: check the TikTok Newsroom or community alerts
- ▸Confirm whether other streamers are dropping at the same time (Discord, Twitter)
- ▸If it's an outage, wait 5–30 minutes and retry
